Fsck Warning

start a livecd on a cd, and then run fsck from that livecd.

If you do a normal boot or even a single user mode boot, then you end up with at least / mounted. Then you cannot run fsck on it.
You have to boot on an external linux media, like the livecd Kjeld mentions, or a usb disk, or what ever you have as external media that can give u a prompt. Then when you have booted, then you must run the fsck on the device (/dev/hda1), and not on a mounted fs.
