"This external drive contains one of the newer WD "Advanced Format" drives inside. This will work fine with most current operating systems, but will not work well with older ones such as XP and especially as an extra drive with Windows Home Server (WHS). An easy work around with XP is to leave the formatting as is, or to format the drive using a Windows 7 (or maybe Vista) machine. I'm not a Mac person so I can't give any advice for that, or for Linux.
With Windows Home Server (WHS) there is a very serious problem for which there is another work around. WHS will insist on formatting the drive itself, and it will format it incorrectly (no need to get technical here). There is a free downloadable WD tool called "WD Align by Acronis," which will appear to work however it will not really work with this drive used in the WHS server pool. I know this from multiple bad experiences.
Without getting into unnecessary detail, the solution to using this drive with WHS 1 is to take the drive out of the plastic case -- it is easy and you can google for how to do this. Then you need to have a plastic "jumper" handy to bridge terminals 7 and 8, which will turn off the advanced drive features. Googling on this will also show pictures of what I am talking about. With care the drive will go back in its case and the problem will be fixed.
This might void your warranty, so you need to be at least a little confident in your ability to work on computer parts before you attempt it."
- Håber i kan hjælpe.
