Boot camp install Win 7 on iMac 27" (ultimo 2009)

Hi,

I am facing a problem installing Win 7 to my iMac  27" (ultimo 2009). I had this version installed two years ago without problems, but now it challenges me.

When creating the bootcamp partition, and booting from the Win 7 DVD I am able to install without problems. When the PC restarts after downloading windows support to my USB drive, installing windows and gets ready to start Windows for the first time, it stalls and the screen is just black.

I read at the support site that you need to create and image of the Win 7 dvd which should be used together with boot camp, but I cannot choose this option (it simply is not here) "the disc image", when using boot camp.

So what to do?

Hi.

You can download the proper Win7-ISO here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7

I faced the same challenge when installing Win10 on a Macbook Pro from late '11, but installation from DVD went ok.

Best rgds.

Hi
Thanks for replying.
The problem here is not the ISO file - Boot camp does not let me choose to install from  the ISO file. Screen dumps shown in Boot Camp Support guide from Apple is not aligned with what I see on my screen in Boot Camp assistant:

1: Get software for Windows support
2: Install Win 7 (which will require the DVD)

If you start the Bootcamp wizard from the Mac, it should fetch the right version of support tools, partition the disk and leave you hanging.

When this happens (after booting from your new Windows DVD), you delete the newly created Bootcamp partition, create a new one and continue the installation, then things should go smoothe from there.

Hi,

I do boot from Win DVD, delete bootcamp by choosing format and create a new one, install it, but unfortunately does not go smoothly from there - scenario described in first post.
However, I found this link Boot Camp: iMac displays a black screen during installation of Windows 7 - Apple Support - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203339
I downloaded this new driver pack and stored it in the root of my USB.
USB is named MBRFAT and is formatted as MS-DOS FAT and connected to back of iMac.
Still I get the black screen before Windows setup is finished.
When following step 4 (in the link you referred me to) the partitions tab (or looking more like button) is dimmed and therefore cannot be clicked, and therefore I cannot click options and then Master Boot Record.
Is this the root to my problem?
Why can't I choose "Partitions"? is my USB (WD Digital 3 years old) too old or lacking some kind of support to be used for this purpose?

Thanks

I wouldn't suspect the USB-stick unless it's hardware-encrypted; they can be a royal pain.
I noticed that Apple suggests quite a long wait for the display. They do not call it checkmate until after several minutes.

However, I recall installing mine WITHOUT the driver support kit, which results in a plain Windows install with default drivers. When installing the driver kit afterwards, one of the packages failed continously, and solution was simply to remove the package from the kit an let Windows update it later.

It was the USB stick - changed to a new one at it worked.
However - You were the only one replying so here's the points?
Will create a new question, MS seems to have ended support for Win 7 - I cannot go to internet via Explorer, and windows update will not upgrade it...

You should still be able to use Win Update, only make sure you have at least SP1.
SP1 can be acquired directly from Microsoft's support pages as part of a update rollup package.
