Would like to change dist to any that is similar to Vista.

Hello!

A friend is about to buy a new computer with Windows Vista.
I must admit that Windows Vista looks pretty nice, with that cool "3d"-desktop.

But since I'm stuck with an old computer with only a processor Pentium III (500Mhz) I use Linux.
Right now I use Mandrake 10.1, but since that one is not as cool as Vista I would like to change.

So my question is if there is any Linux dist that looks like Vista, and is easy to use like Vista?

I have heard about Ubuntu but I can not figure out if it is better/cooler than Mandriva, or if it is similar to Vista.

Any comment or suggestion is very appreciated.

Best regards
Fredrik

An general advice:
- If you want Vista, buy a new high end computer and a copy of Vista.
- If you want something similar to Vista, buy a new high end computer and a copy of Vista and change the desktop wallpaper or something.
- If you want something better than Vista, download Mandriva DVD and install it on your old computer. If you want something better than Vista with cool desktop effects, you need a supported GPU. It is possible to find one for your old computer, but you can't do it with any GPU.
- If you want a cool system, buy a Mac. Under the hood it works similar to Linux, but it is high on the cool´o´meter.

The question about Ubuntu: Ubuntu is very different from both Vista and Mandriva. It is as good as Mandriva and it does support all cool features Linux supports. It does not have as many less cool features as Mandriva, because it does not install KDE, but that's just perfect for an beginner who only needs that cool easy to use features.

And finally, why do you visit a Danish support forum to ask for support in English? Mandriva have forums far better that any Danish forum. And Ubuntu does too.

Hello Joex2!

Thanks for your great answer!
I will go for Mandriva then!

And finally, I'm from sweden and for all forum that I have visited, this forum is the best. All danish people is always very helpfull and nice too! The only thing I miss is a upload of files to illustrate a question sometimes.

Thanks alot!

If you need something to "impress" the Vista guys with then try the Compiz/Beryl/Compiz Fusion
window manager.

New versions of Mandrivia and Ubuntu should have it.

I seriously doubt that it will run well on your hardware.

Hello Arne!
Thanks for your reply!
Yes I must say that it would be fun to show my friend with Vista a cool Linux dist.

I have a couple of questions that I hope you have the time for.

Do you think that a Pentium III will not be enough for the latest Mandriva?
Or do you think it is not enough for latest Mandriva with "Compiz/Beryl/Compiz Fusion"?

Best regards

Compiz/fusion highly relies on openGL so it depends on which graphicscard you have.
