Quark CMS and the necessary system software components for color management must be installed in order to assign ICC profiles in QuarkXPress 4.x. If you did not install Quark CMS when you originally upgraded to or installed QuarkXPress 4.x, please see the tech·note entitled Installing: Quark Color Mangement System (Mac OS). If Quark CMS is installed, you can enable it by choosing Utilities → XTensions Manager and checking Quark CMS. Quit and relaunch QuarkXPress to enable Quark CMS. To activate color management, check the Color Management Active check box in the Color Management Preferences dialog box (Edit → Preferences → Color Management).
The Quark CMS XTensions™ software for QuarkXPress™ 4.x software allows you to work with ICC (International Color Consortium) profiles to accurately render color across your input, display, and output devices. (CMS = Color Management System) What Are ICC Profiles? Scanners, monitors, and printers use different color models and have varying ranges of colors they can represent. ICC profiles describe the color capabilities of these devices in terms of a device-independent, mathematical color model. A color management module (CMM) compares the ICC profile of the source device (such as your monitor) with the ICC profile of the destination device (such as your printer) to create consistent color results. Quark CMS lets you assign ICC profiles to colors and images in your documents. If you do not have ICC profiles for your specific devices, you can try using the profiles that are provided with QuarkXPress 4.x. Or you may want to contact the manufacturers of your devices for information on which profiles to use.

How Do I Know Which ICC Profiles Are Available? Choose Utilities → Profile Manager to display the ICC profiles that are installed and being used by Quark CMS. If a profile is checked, Quark CMS will use it. To specify that Quark CMS not use a particular profile, click the profile and choose No from the Include pop-up menu or click the checkmark next to the profile to uncheck it. To use profiles that are not installed on the system but are available in another folder, click Browse (Mac OS) or Select (Windows) under Auxiliary Profile Folder and navigate to the folder containing the profiles you want to use. Only the folders themselves will display, not the items inside. Click the appropriate folder and click OK (Select \"Folder Name\"). The path to the folder will display to the right of the word “Folder.” Click Update to display these profiles in your profile list.
Setting Default Profiles You can specify default profiles in the Color Management Preferences dialog box (Edit → Preferences → Color Management). Like other preference settings, any changes made with no documents open will be globally applied to any documents created from that point on, and changes made while a document is open will affect only that document. Note: If a profile displays in one of the areas below but not in another, it is possible that the profile does not contain the information necessary to be used as both a destination and source profile.
The Destination Profiles area lets you select profiles for the devices that will render the on-screen or printed image. Changes made to the Monitor setting will affect your monitor display, and changes made to the Separation or Composite Printers settings will affect your output to those printers.
The Default Source Profiles area lets you select profiles for the color and image source for each of the three color models (RGB, CMYK, and Hexachrome™). In the RGB tab, Color corresponds to the monitor that you use when you create RGB colors in QuarkXPress. Image corresponds to the input device, such as a scanner, that you most commonly use to create RGB images.
In the CMYK tab, Color and Image correspond to the CMYK source (such as a monitor or scanner) of your colors and images. Unless you have a CMYK monitor or scanner, you should select the profile of your CMYK output device.
The Hexachrome tab works in the same way as the CMYK tab; if you do not have any Hexachrome profiles, you will see No Profiles under Color and Image. (See note above.) Assigning ICC Profiles to Imported Pictures If Quark CMS is running, a Profile pop-up menu and Color Correction check box will be added to the Get Picture dialog box (File menu). This allows you to define the image’s source profile to be compared with the destination profile. Profiles specified in the Get Picture dialog box are specific to that picture and will override the default source profile in the Color Management Preferences dialog box.
Select the profile of the device that was last used to modify the picture. For example, if you scanned the image, you should choose the profile that matches your scanner. If you scanned the image and then edited it in an image-editing application, you should choose the profile of the monitor on which you edited it. If you assigned an ICC profile to the image and saved it in an image-editing application, you should choose that profile.
Uncheck Color Correction if you do not want Quark CMS to perform color correction when the output device color space is the same as the image color space. For example, if the image is CMYK and your destination device is a CMYK printer, you probably do not want Quark CMS to perform a color correction, since it is not needed. Tip: If the Profile pop-up menu and Color Correction check box are unavailable, the picture you are importing may have been saved by an application not supported by Quark CMS. Quark CMS will only define the color space of a color raster image, such as a TIFF, JPEG, BMP, and PhotoCD; so you will not be able to define an ICC profile for all graphic file formats.
Note: The Profile Information palette settings are the same as the Get Picture dialog box settings. The Profile Information palette allows you to change the profile of a picture after you\'ve imported it. To display the Profile Information palette, select a picture box and choose View → Show Profile Information.
