How to get wireless adapter to work with Mandriva?

Hello guys!

I just bought a wireless usb-adapter (ZyXEL NWD-270N).
First I tried it in my Windows 7 computer and it works fine.

Then I plugged it into my Mandriva 2010 computer and Mandriva seems to find the adapter.
But under it can not find my home network.
(The two computer is standing next to each other)

If you guys got any ideas how to solve this pleas let me know!

Btw during I tried this the eth0 was running, but correct me if I'm wrong I do not think that matters?

Best regards
Fredrik

What does ifconfig shows, and/or iwconfig ?

Next you can try, where wlan0 is the wireless adapter.

iwlist wlan0 scanning

Does this output anything? It should come up with accessible wireless hotspots.

Also sometimes wireless cards, are configuredas eth1 istead as wlan0.

As you can see with iwconfig, that card seems to be recognized as wlan0

Try:
You get the scan error, because the interface is not up.

First bring up the wlan0 interface
iwconfig wlan0 up

Next you should be able to scan.
iwlist wlan0 scanning

If you can see hotspots here, it is working, but I do not know how to configure this in Mandrake GUI, since I am not familiar with Mandrake. I run Debian myself, with Gnome and using nm-applet.

Hello!

I tried iwconfig wlan0 up, but "up" does not seems to work.
I found this site:
http://www.linux-tutorial.info/modules.php?name=ManPage&sec=8&manpage=iwconfig
...and tried:
iwconfig wlan0 ap any that I guess should try to connect to the best access point.

But I also tried iwlist wlan0 scanning but it still says:
Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

If you got or see any clues, it is most welcome!
Best regards
Fredrik

Maybe it is ifconfig wlan0 up :)

Hello!

I tried but still no luck.

I got:

[root@linux_2 fredrik]# ifup wlan0
RTNETLINK answers: No such file or directory
Wireless device wlan0 is configured with a roaming daemon but isn't associated

Determining IP information for wlan0...SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
failed.
[root@linux_2 fredrik]#

Sounds like I missing something when it says:
No such file or directory
??

Do you got any ideas from this?

Best regards
Fredrik

Hello!

Thanks for all your help!

Actually I returned my zyxel usb adapter and changed to d-link dwl-g122 and it works out of the box.
