Yesterday thousands of blacks from all of America gathered in the city of Jena, Louisiana in a march of protest, which brought back memories of the sixties marches in the south. The organizers expected around 40.000 contestants, but the police who kept an eye on the demonstrators refused to comment on the number of contestants. The background for the protest march is the case about the so called “Jena 6” six young black men, who in december last year was convicted for an attempt of murder on a white student from their high school. The conviction was later softened to dangerous assault. The conviction came no more than 3 months after the local prosecution rejected to convict a group of white students from the same high school, who had hung up slipknots in a tree.
Anyways did the black civilrightfighters, and former presidential candidates Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, a lot to point out, that the march isn’t about racism, but about equal rights for the law. “This is a march for justice – not against white or against Jena” Al Sharpton said according to CNN. Sharpton called yesterdays march for the beginning of the 21st centurys civilrightsmovement.
