Open the Device Manager by right clicking on My Computer and choosing Properties. Look under the Sound, Video, and Game Controllers section. You should see a listing called Creative SB Live! There should not be any listings for any other sound cards. If listings for another sound card are present, that card will need to be uninstalled and removed from the system. Onboard sound cards will need to be disabled in the BIOS or by jumpers on the motherboard.
If the SBLive! is properly installed and you still get the error, go to the Control Panel and double-click on Multimedia (or Sounds and Multimedia if you\'re using Windows ME). On the Audio tab, make sure the preferred device for playback is SBLive Wave Out and the preferred device for recording is SBLive Wave In. There should also be a check in the box labeled Use only preferred devices. Correct these settings if necessary.
If this fails to resolve the issue, try disabling background programs by pressing CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Task Manager. You will need to choose End Task on every program except Explorer and Systray. When Explorer and Systray are the only items remaining, try to play a sound. If sound works, it may be necessary to restart the computer and then repeat the process by disabling one item at a time and then trying a sound. This will enable you to determine which program is causing the problem; that item can then be updated or uninstalled.
If the error persists, it is recommended that you check the IRQ\'s. Open the Device Manager and double-click on Computer. You will need to be on the View Resources tab and you should have Interrupt Request selected. This will display a list of all the IRQ\'s being used in your system. Locate the SBLive card (not the SB16 Emulation) and check to see what IRQ it is using. The sound card should not be using IRQ 9 or sharing the IRQ with another device. An exception to this is a listing called IRQ Holder for PCI Steering or ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
If the sound card is sharing an IRQ or using IRQ 9, try moving the SBLive to a different PCI slot. Alternately, try moving the device that is sharing the IRQ with the sound card. This will force Windows to redetect the device and will usually change the IRQ. It may be necessary to change slots several times to get a favorable IRQ arrangement. Another way to change IRQ assignment is through the system\'s BIOS; consult your motherboard documentation for details on how to do that, or call your motherboard manufacturer.
