Flash/Shockwave/english

Flash is a format for developing/playing animation and interactivity over the web using vector graphics instead of bitmaps though jpeg can be a part. The Plug-in is the engine that renders the graphics realtime making download time short since it's only the vector information (x-y coordinates in principle) that take up bandwith. Another advantage, since is's vectors, is that it is resolution independent. (Compare a Illustrator file with a PhotoShop file).

Shockwave is a format for Director files over the web. It strips the file for unnessesary information and leaves it to the plug-in to play it back.

Shockwave plug-in plays both Flash and Shockwave files therefore the larger size.
